GB Short Track warm up for the Olympic Qualifiers at the Invitational Cup in the Netherland

The International Invitational Cup in Heerenveen, the Netherlands this weekend was an opportunity for the GB Short Track team to get their first taste of competition this season, ahead of the Olympic Qualifying events.

After a summer of training and preparation, eleven British athletes attended the event alongside teams from Italy, France, Germany and host nation, the Netherlands, amongst others.

With the Winter Olympics now less than six months away, the athletes were ready for this chance to compete against some of Europe’s best skaters.

British Champion Charlotte Gilmartin, 27, had a great confidence boost taking the ladies 1,500m title ahead of home favourite Yara van Kerkoh and Olympic medalist Arianna Fontana of Italy, while Kathryn Thomson, 21, won the B final of the 500m, continuing her progress from last season.

The Ladies relay team, qualified into the A final, a further stepping stone to prepare to qualify for the Olympics, never before achieved by GB ladies. They finished 4th behind Italy, the Netherlands and France.

The ladies results placed them overall 3rd at the event, with the Netherlands in 1st place and Italy in 2nd. The GB ladies team was made up of Charlotte Gilmartin, Kathryn Thomson, Hannah Morrison, Sam Morrison and Isabelle Roberts.

Great Britain’s Farrell Treacy, 22, finished 25th place overall in the Mens event. Younger brother Ethan Treacy, 19 made his GB debut, and achieved a personal best in the 500m.

The team will now return to Nottingham to the National Ice Centre to prepare for the World Cup series and first Olympic Qualifying event which takes place on 28th September in Hungary.
