Gold rush for British figure skaters at Bavarian Open

There was multiple success for the British figure skaters in Oberstdorf this weekend (11th to 15th February), with two Gold medals and six top ten finishes for Team GB at the ISU Bavarian Open.

Danielle Harrison, who trains in Dundee and recently competed in the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival, started the competition with a bang, claiming Gold in the Junior Ladies event. She put in an outstanding performance in the free skate to finish in first place, whilst taking third position in the Short Programme. She scored 134.61 points overall, with 87.64 points in her free skate.

Amani Fancy and Christopher Boyadji skated their way to Great Britain’s second Gold medal of the competition in the Senior Pairs event, with an overall score of 132.68.

Robin Cousins, NISA’s High Performance Manager commented: “The Bavarian Open is a valuable opportunity for our skaters to be seen on the world stage. Any event where we have British skaters on the podium or close to the podium is a fantastic result for UK skating.

“There is always work to be done and we are constantly striving to improve but to achieve two Gold medals and six top ten finishes is great from a national skating perspective. Danielle, Chris and Amani have done very well this weekend and we now need to work hard to maintain that standard and continue to improve”.

There were 14 skaters representing Great Britain in Oberstdorf this weekend, including two couples, and between them they achieved six top ten finishes in strong fields against some of the best skaters in the world.

Peter Hallam put in a good performance to finish fourth in the Senior Men’s event with an overall score of 168.24, while Luke Digby finished fifth in the Advanced Novice Boys event, scoring 91.95 points overall.

Katia Fedyushchenko and Lucas Ketteridge finished seventh overall in a strong field in the Junior Ice Dance category. There was also a seventh place finish for Abby Green in the Advanced Novice Girls event.

The British skaters are all part of the National Ice Skating Association’s (NISA) performance programme.
