Lee Valley ice skaters were crowned champions in a national skating competition last weekend, coming top for the first time in 23 years of taking part in the contest at Lee Valley Ice Centre.
The Lee Valley Skating Club team competed with over 400 participants from all over the UK in the National Team Challenge, an inter-club competition covering all disciplines of skating, including free skating, dance and synchro.
The annual contest, the only team event in the UK, attracted many ice rinks across the country. During the day, skaters and groups of skaters entered into various categories to collect points in a bid to be crowned winners.
The event attracted judges and officials from all over the UK, as well as some from Europe, and ended with a big 'show stopper' finale which hosted up to 30 skaters from the same club.
Alan Seabrook, General Manager at Vibrant Partnerships, with responsibilities for Lee Valley Ice Centre, praised the winning team’s success over the weekend: “Lee Valley did brilliantly and we are all proud of the fact that at last, after 23 years, they have come out champions.
“All the skaters in the team have worked really hard to get to pole position in this prestigious event.”
The Ice Centre in Lea Bridge Road will be closed from 12 July - 4 September for essential repairs to safeguard the venue’s short term future.
The work includes the construction of a new ice pad – the actual skating surface, plus a new cooling system and a new rink barrier.
