Lawrence Demmy

 

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Lawrence Demmy on 9th December 2016 at the age of 85.

 

Lawrence, with his dance partner, Jean Westwood, was World Ice Dance Champion four years in a row from 1952 to 1955, European Ice Dance Champion 1954 and 1955 and British Ice Dance Champion from 1952 – 1955.

 

Following his competitive career, Great Britain was further proud when Lawrence was elected to ISU in 1965.  He became a full Technical Committee member of Ice Dance in 1967 and was to Chair that Committee for 15 years from 1969 to 1984.

 

Lawrence and his partner were inducted to the Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1977 and Lawrence went on to a greater achievement when he was elected to the ISU Council in 1984 to 1994.

 

Subsequently, he achieved the honour of being elected ISU Vice President of Figure Skating from 1994 to 1998.  In 1998, Lawrence became ISU Honorary Vice President.

 

Honours were further recognized here in Great Britain when he was awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire) by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to the sport of Figure Skating.

 

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Pamela, and his three children, Helen, Richard and Lloyd and the entire NISA skating family send our condolences
