NISA Coach Convention


The three-day Coaches Convention dates have now been confirmed for 2017 and will take place from Sunday 13 August – Tuesday 15 August.

As with the past 3 years the Convention this will include a variety of both on and off-ice activities covering all disciplines, including seminars with internationally renowned coaches and motivational classes.

Level 2 + Coaches will be required to attend the three-day event once every three years in order to validate their coaching licence as the LCS credits system no longer applies, Coaches will be able to attend every year if they wish. Priority spaces are available to Level 2 + coaches, any level 1 coach who may wish to attend unfortunately cannot be confirmed until at least 3 weeks prior to the event and is dependent on whether any further spaces may be available.

Kris Wirtz - Kris is a Canadian Pair Skater who competed with Kristy Sargeant in the Winter Olympics twice. He previously partnered Sherry Ball  at the 1992 Olympics. Over the years, he has also competed in Canadian skating championships in singles, dance, and fours. Kris has been coaching successful singles and pair skaters for many years at regional through to world championship level.

Kori Ade (TBC)  - Kori is a national, international and Olympic coach who was named PSA Developmental Coach of the Year in 2011 and was the USG Building Dreams award recipient in 2014.  She currently holds PSA ratings in Moves in the Field and Freestyle, is a Master Rated V coach and also holds certifications as an AFAA (personal training and group class instructor) trainer and F.A.S.T. off-ice trainer. 

Sheila Thelan - Sheila is a PSA Master Rated coach with more than 25 years of coaching experience.  She currently teaches in an around the Twin Cities in MN.  She has also been a presenter at PSA, CFSA, and ISI International Conferences. Sheila is the Designer and President of  Champion Cords, which produces training aids for skaters that teach alignment, position, muscle memory, body awareness, and technique. 

Pasquale Carmerlengo  - Pasquale is an Italian retired competitive ice dancer who now works as a coach (ice dance) and choreographer (all disciplines). He previously competed at the 1992 and 1998 Winter Olympics and after this went on to retire from competitive skating. He has since then worked as a coach at the Detroit Skating Club inBloomfield Hills, Michigan, previously in collaboration with former World champion ice dancer, Anjelika Krylova and he was also awarded the Professional Skaters Association Paul McGrath Choreographer of the Year award in 2012.


Troy Goldstein - Troy is a well-respected and accomplished ISU and World Technical Specialist for singles & pairs and an ISU Certified Technical Seminar moderator.

Chris Buchanan - Chris is the ISU synchronized skating Technical Committee Chairman, ISU Referee, Technical Controller & Judge for ice dancing & synchronized skating. Also an ISU Moderator for components, Technical Controllers, Technical Specialists, Referees & Judges and a current OAC member. Chris formerly was a National Championship Level ice dance competitor and is currently the NISA Finance Director.

David Hartley - David is the current NISA Development Director and a qualified NISA Level 3 coach. Previously an International skater David was the British Champion in 1998 and part of the European and World Championship team in 2003. David has choreographed and appeared in many ice Sheffield shows

Simon Briggs - Simon is coach to the current British Ladies Champion, Natasha McKay and Irish Men's Champion, Conor Stakelum. Also, British Champions Danielle Harrison, Karly Robertson, Jenna McCorkell and Matthew Parr. He is a NISA Level 5 coach, and at Sochi 2014 Olympics he was coach to Britain's Figure skating Mens and Ladies entry. He is one of the world’s leading Technical Specialists, officiating at European & World Championships and the 2010 Olympic Games. He was Coaching Director for the National Ice Skating Association of Great Britain for many years and competed at international level himself.

Mark Hanretty - Mark is a Scottish born ice skater who represented Great Britain at the World and European championships. Following nine years as a successful singles skater he found his most suited discipline in ice dance at the age of 19. Beyond his amateur career he enjoyed multiple seasons as a professional skater in Torvill and Dean’s hit TV show, Dancing on Ice.

Mark has also carved a successful career as a choreographer and NISA qualified Level 3 coach.

Linda Craig – Linda was a skater from back in the 90s, and more recently was a judge. However, the rest of the time she is Dr Craig, Clinical Psychologist, with 8 years’ experience specialising in working with children and young people.

Kelly Buddery - Kelly has been the resident off-ice coach at iceSheffield since the rink opened in 2003, specialising in off-ice training and on-ice performance and choreography. A NISA Level 2 coach and REPS level 3 Personal Trainer with qualifications in many areas including Advanced Flexibility, Pilates and Sport Strength and Conditioning. She is off-ice coach for current British Champions in Free Skating, Ice dance and Pairs.



We have again secured hotel room rates at the Holiday Inn Express and also the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria. Rates for each hotel are as follows and are available for the 12th - 15th August 2017 (all rates include car parking and wifi, per room):

The cost of the Convention for 2017 will be:

£310 per person – Full 3 days

£206 – 2 Days attendance (only applicable to those who attended in 2015 or 2016 or if not required as a mandatory factor for the Coach annual relicensing)

£103 – Single Days attendance (only applicable to those who attended in 2015 or 2016 or if not required as a mandatory factor for the Coach annual relicensing)

For those attending 1 or 2 days only do not as yet have to specify which days until a draft timetable has been released.

You do not have to pay now and the final deadline for payment to be received is Friday 28 July 2017 however please be aware that to secure your space payment will have had to been received and will be on a first come first served basis until capacity is reached. 



Again due to the success of the First Aid course we are this year again holding a course for this and there will be sessions on the Sunday and Monday -  There will be no extra fee for the workshop and is a an opportunity to update the qualification however this will be on a first come first served basis until the amount of allocated spaces have been filled. Anyone who may be interested in this (and has not already done so) please could you register your interest by reply to this email. Only those who have registered will be permitted to attend – the deadline for registration for the First Aid workshop will be Friday 21st July 2017 (unless capacity is reached prior to this).
