A number of British Ice Skating Honorary Life Membership Awards are announced each year to recognise and thank individuals who have gone above and beyond in their contributions to the ice skating community in the UK.
Mandy Worth was announced as a recipient at the 2024 BIS Annual General Meeting for her many years of dedicated support and service to British short track. From competing as an athlete herself to running the Nottingham Ice Racing Club and serving as the GB Coach for multiple Junior and Senior international events and much more, she has constantly contributed to the growth and success of the sport.
We caught up with her to find out a bit more about her experiences in her own words:
"It is a privilege to receive this award. I would like to thank everyone who I have had the pleasure to work with in my 50+ years in the sport."
What is your earliest ice skating memory?
I was watching the sport from around the age of 12, when there were no juniors (under 16s) and no ladies.
I remember training on the ice at the Nottingham club, being one of the first ladies to be allowed to train with the club, I was about 15/16 years old. I then went on to race competitively.
What has kept you so engaged in short track skating all these years?
Seeing so many young skaters come in and enjoy the sport. The satisfaction of helping them to improve and achieve their goals. Playing a part in so many skaters' lives and sharing their successes. It's a sport I have always loved, and helping promote and support Short Track has always been a pleasure for me.
What have been some standout highlights of your involvement in short track skating?
My highlight was skating in the 1980 Olympics, and coming 3rd in the World and European championships. Being able to watch my eldest son Paul skate in the 2010 Olympics. Coaching my younger son Mark to race at a high level, and become a great coach. Watching my husband Pete be the Chief Referee at the 2014 Sochi, 2018 Pyeongchang, and 2022 Beijing Olympics. Achieving a level 4 in coaching and being involved with coaching the National team.
